NCSC advises UK organisations to take action following conflict in the Middle East

In response to the evolving events in the Middle East, the NCSC is advising that UK organisations review their cyber security posture.

How has the cyber threat changed?

While the ongoing conflict in the Middle East hasn’t yet triggered a major shift in the direct cyber threat from Iran to the UK, the situation is volatile and could change rapidly.

Key Risk Assessments

  • Indirect Threats: There is a near-certain, elevated risk for organizations with physical operations or supply chain dependencies in the Middle East.

  • Iranian Capability: State-sponsored and state-linked Iranian actors almost certainly possess the capability to launch cyberattacks at any time.

How should organisations respond?

UK organizations should prepare for potential collateral damage from Iran-linked hacktivists by reviewing existing advisories on DDoS attacks, phishing, and ICS (Industrial Control Systems) targeting.

Strategic Recommendations

  • High-Risk Entities: Organizations with a physical presence or supply chains in the Middle East should immediately tighten their security posture. We recommend increasing active monitoring and conducting a thorough review of your external attack surface.

  • Early Detection: All UK entities are encouraged to register for the NCSC’s Early Warning service to receive real-time alerts regarding network vulnerabilities.

  • Critical National Infrastructure (CNI): Given the volatile situation, CNI providers should proactively implement the NCSC’s guidance on preparing for severe cyber threats.

Physical & Personnel Security

Security is not limited to digital assets. Organizations should consult the National Protective Security Authority (NPSA) for:

  • Personnel Security: Mitigating internal and human-centric risks.

  • Physical Sabotage: Following specific guidance to protect physical sites from hardware interference or damage.

Action Item: For a step-by-step breakdown of these defensive measures, please refer to the NCSC’s “actions to take when threat is heightened” documentation.
